Widely Spaced Teeth: Is Invisalign an Option?

Wide spaces between your teeth can make your smile less attractive. If you are self-conscious about gaps between your teeth or the overall alignment of your smile, Invisalign can be a viable orthodontic option that will restore your appearance and self-confidence.

Choosing an Orthodontic Treatment

Choosing the right treatment is vital to the success of your orthodontic treatment. Depending upon how large the gaps are between your teeth or how severe your misalignment is, your orthodontist will recommend Invisalign or traditional braces.

Your choice of orthodontic treatment begins with a consultation. Our team will evaluate your teeth, making molds as well as digital photographs to demonstrate what your teeth look like now and what they will look like after your treatment is completed. Based on your individual goals and needs, we will recommend a treatment and explain how it will work, how long it will take, and what to expect after treatment is completed.

How Invisalign Works

Orthodontic treatment is usually associated with traditional braces, which uses metal braces and rubber bands to gradually move your teeth into proper alignment. With Invisalign, metal and bands are replaced by trays made of clear plastic.

These trays are carefully formed to move your teeth a small amount while you are wearing them. You usually wear each tray for about two weeks then switch to a new tray that is slightly different than the previous tray. The new tray moves the teeth again, until, by the time you use the last tray, your teeth are in their proper position.

During your treatment, you must be careful to follow your orthodontist’s instructions for care of your trays. You should wear them for about twenty-two hours of each day. During meals, they should be removed to keep them clean. They also should not be exposed to hot beverages to keep from warping the plastic. Foods and darkly colored drinks could discolor your trays, so you should also avoid exposure to these types of staining agents. With proper care, and by using your trays according to instructions, you’ll achieve the smile you’ve always wanted.

To find out if Invisalign is the right treatment option for you, contact Newman Orthodontics today to schedule an appointment.

Orthodontics for Children and Adults

Advancements in the field of orthodontics include innovative orthodontic treatments that address dental anomalies effectively, with least discomfort for the patients. Utilizing these effective, comfortable treatment options children and adults can straighten their misaligned teeth, and benefit from a charming, dazzling smile as well as improved facial appearance.

Dental Anomalies that Can Be Treated with Orthodontic Procedures

Crooked teeth, protruded teeth, crossbites, openbites, overbites and underbites can be successfully corrected with orthodontic braces. With dental irregularities out of the way, children and adults can also improve their physical fitness by avoiding tooth loss, abnormal wear of tooth surfaces, gum diseases, chewing problems, digestion disorders and speech impairments.

Thorough Evaluation Necessary to Finalize the Treatment Procedure

Before prescribing orthodontic procedures, orthodontists examine the structure of the teeth, face and jaws of their patients through X-rays, photographs and bite impressions. Metal braces, ceramic braces or Invisalign braces will be recommended on the basis of this evaluation.

Traditional metal braces are usually recommended for children. These braces are strong and also cost-effective. Clear ceramic braces, known as tooth-colored braces are very smooth, translucent and are completely stain resistant.

Invisalign invisible braces are mostly favored by adults and teens. Invisalign clear plastic aligners are specially designed using advanced 3D imaging technology. The patient has to wear one set of aligners for two weeks and replace it with a fresh set, to speed up the teeth straightening.

Invisalign braces promote good oral hygiene. Patients can eat, drink, brush and floss normally. Moreover, these braces are virtually invisible, so the treatment can be completed without the knowledge of others.

An Experienced Orthodontist Is Most Important

Only an experienced orthodontist can correctly determine the braces that are most suitable for children and adults. Besides, your orthodontist should be able to educate you on the orthodontic options available, and why a particular procedure is most suitable for you. In this technology age, the doctor can even show you the after treatment images on the computer, so that you can have a clear idea of the results you can expect.

Look Good at Work with Clear Braces

Adult orthodontic patients often want to undergo treatment without looking like a teeny-bopper, especially in professional settings where they have to maintain their credibility. Having visible braces can be a drawback in the workplace, a concern that may cause some patients to avoid treatment altogether.
If you want to straighten your teeth without attracting attention to the fact that you’re doing so, consider invisible braces.
Patients who want to take advantage of invisible braces have a number of options that an orthodontist can use to treat any patient’s case and fit into any budget.
Ceramic brackets are made of translucent material, allowing them to blend in with the teeth. This is a good, affordable option for invisible braces for many patients, but these brackets do have some drawbacks. They’re slightly more fragile than conventional braces, and they can become discolored. Also, the wires that connect the brackets are still visible, although the overall effect on the smile is still much less noticeable than with traditional metal brackets.
Incognito braces are another alternative for patients who are concerned about their appearance during orthodontic treatment and not just after. With this method, the brackets and wires are placed on the back of the teeth and customized to your unique situation.
The Invisalign system is yet another option for orthodontic patients who don’t want to obscure their smiles during treatment. This approach repositions the teeth through a progressive series that apply varying forces to the teeth, just as regular braces do. But these trays are much less intrusive, and they can be removed at mealtime and for brushing and flossing.
The Invisalign system eliminates many of the concerns associated with bracket-and-wire techniques, whether they are on the front or back of the teeth. With Invisalign, patients can maintain a normal oral hygiene routine without the worry that their appliances will get in the way of brushing and flossing or trap leftover food particles close to the teeth, providing a food source for oral bacteria.
Invisalign patients also don’t face the same dietary restrictions as those with standard braces.
If you’re reluctant to pursue orthodontic treatment due to aesthetic concerns, consider one of the forms of invisible braces instead. You’ll get a beautiful smile in the long-term without having to sacrifice your appearance in the short-term.

Invisalign: What happens after treatment is completed?

Invisalign treatment is a treatment used by an orthodontist to straighten or realign teeth in order to improve the aesthetic qualities of a person’s smile, or to correct dental anomalies that might exist in the patient’s mouth, such as overbites, underbites, and malocclusions.

Invisalign differs from conventional braces treatments in several ways; not least of all, they are made of a clear material, and so are virtually invisible when worn. Invisalign can also be removed, and so wearers are able to enjoy food and drinks that would otherwise be off limits with conventional braces. The ability to remove Invisalign aids the cleaning process too, making them easy to maintain.

The procedure involves the patient wearing a series of clear braces that have been specially developed by the orthodontist to slowly realign specific teeth into a new desired position. Once one set of Invisalign braces has completed its task, it is replaced with the next in the series; this continues until the desired result has been achieved.

Each set of retainers is typically worn for around two weeks, while regular visits to the orthodontist, typically around six week intervals, will ensure the treatment is progressing as planned.

Once the Invisalign treatment has been completed, the patient will require a retainer to be worn, typically during the night in order to bolster the now-realigned teeth. If a patient neglects to wear a retainer after Invisalign treatment has concluded, they will experience their teeth beginning to shift naturally back to their preordained position in the mouth; undoing all the work of the treatment!

Over time, the jawbone around the realigned teeth begins to thicken and grow in density, which will help to keep the teeth in their new position. However, the support afforded by the bone is not sufficient to hold the teeth in their new position unaided, and so it is necessary to use a retainer to maintain the alignment. With Invisalign treatment, the final set of aligners used can often be repurposed as the retainer.

Importance of Plaque Control During Orthodontic Treatment

Everyone knows the importance of keeping plaque under control for the good of our dental health; this is especially important during periods of dental treatment.

For any patient who is undergoing orthodontic treatments, such as braces, it is important to follow the instructions of the orthodontist, who can advise on good dental hygiene habits to help minimize the likliehood of tooth decay during treatment. Plaque is a sticky substance that forms on our teeth and gumline due to bacteria in the mouth. It is a natural occurring substance, but regular brushing and flossing of the teeth helps to remove plaque. Plaque that is not removed can build up and solidify into a harder substance called tartar. Tartar is more difficult to remove, and often requires the services of a dental hygienist to successfully get rid of tartar build up. Plaque and tartar, if not removed, can lead to tooth decay.

Orthodontic treatment can make keeping the teeth clean more challenging; the supports and wires used in treatment can interfere with the patient’s normal dental hygiene program. Brushing and flossing become less effective, and plaque build-up is harder to prevent. As a result, it’s vitally important to ensure a good dental hygiene program is maintained.

An orthodontist is able to advise on a series of measures that can help to minimize the risks associated with plaque build up during orthodontic treatment.

These steps include the avoidance of sticky or sugary foods and drinks, advice on how to brush and floss while wearing braces, the best type of toothbrush, toothpaste and floss to use, advice on using flouride mouthwashes to wash away bacteria, and of course regular dental visits to ensure dental health is being maintained, and to counter any problems that may have arisen.

Following the orthodontist’s advice on dental hygiene while wearing braces can help minimize the risks associated with plaque and tooth decay during braces treatment, helping to keep teeth clean and healthy during orthodontic treatment.

Are clear braces actually “clear”?

In the past, orthodontic treatments involving teeth realignment were typically performed using traditional dental braces with wires and brackets in order to straighten crooked, misaligned or crowded teeth. Although effective, traditional dental braces can be unsightly, especially for image-conscious teenagers.
However, advancements in dental technology have given rise to clear braces that provide all of the function of traditional dental braces, but without much of the adverse effect that normal dental braces might have on a person’s image.
Clear braces aren’t actually completely clear and so are not invisible in the wearer’s mouth. Instead, clear braces are fabricated from ceramic materials and alloys that appear to be clear; while traditional metallic braces are instantly noticeable, casual observers will likely fail to notice a person is wearing clear braces at all without closer inspection.
Clear braces work in the same fashion as traditional braces; they are fitted by an orthodontist as a means to exert pressure on specific teeth in order to slowly pull them into position and correct issues such as overbites, underbites, or to correct spaces between teeth to improve alignment.
In addition to their clear appearance, clear braces are also lighter and less bulky in the mouth.
For a completely clear solution to realign teeth, consider Invisalign as an alternative to clear braces. Although many people believe the two to be one-and-the-same, they are in fact two distinctly different treatments. While clear braces follow the same bracket and wire model of traditional braces, Invisalign involves the use of transparent trays that a patient wears for a period of time over their teeth.
Invisalign treatment involves a wearer using a series of clear mouth-guards that have been created to shift teeth in pre-determined small increments over a period of time. Each mouth-guard is worn for around two weeks, before it is discarded and the next one in the sequence is worn, again for a period of around two weeks. The treatment continues on a similar cycle until the desired result is achieved.
And so, for any image conscious teenager – or adult – who is seeking a method of improving their smile through the orthodontic realignment of teeth, there are methods available to allow them to do so, from clear braces to Invisalign.

Will Braces Correct TMJ Disorder?

TMJ, or Temporomandibular Joint Disorder, is a severely debilitating condition that affects a person’s jaw joints; TMJ is normally characterized by the sufferer experiencing pain the muscles of the face, head, jaws and neck. Many people believe that TMJ is a condition they have to put up with, but orthodontics can help relieve the symptoms of TMJ.

TMJ occurs when the joint which connects the mandible (lower jaw) with the temporal bone in the skull becomes misaligned, and there are many causes and factors which can lead to TMJ, from misaligned bite, to bruxism, and skull trauma.

In addition to the symptoms given above, TMJ can also be characterized by the clicking, or popping of jaw joints; by jaws locking or sticking in open or closed positions; or by changes in a person’s biting alignment. In fact, there are many symptoms of TMJ, and often a diagnosis from an orthodontist can confirm whether TMJ exists in a patient.

While many sufferers of TMJ tend to live through the pain, others rely on relaxation, physiotherapy and massage techniques to relieve the symptoms. However, for more prolonged relief, TMJ can be successfully treated by an orthodontist through the use of dental braces.

The braces work by slowly altering the position of a patient’s teeth, helping to realign their biting pattern by shifting teeth through exerted pressure on one or more teeth. As the teeth shift into the desired position, the pressure on the mandible joint is lessened, helping to relieve the symptoms of the disorder.

Sufferers of TMJ needn’t feel they have to battle through the pain associated with the condition. TMJ will not improve of its own accord, and so sufferers should seek advice from an orthodontist for diagnosis of the condition, and also methods to relieve and cure the symptoms of temporomandibular joint disorder.

Benefits of Invisible Braces

Braces are an orthodontic tool that can effectively correct improper bites. Some patients, however, are uncomfortable with how the braces look, especially many adults who feel that orthodontic treatment is for teenagers. One solution is invisible braces from Incognito - braces placed on the backs of the teeth, where no one can see them.
Invisible braces are the only braces available that are completely customized, giving you the most efficient treatment possible. Since the brackets are placed behind the teeth instead of on the front, you can complete your treatment without anyone knowing you have braces.
Invisible braces are also excellent for patients who are worried about damage that brackets and wires from traditional braces can cause to the front of the teeth. Discoloration or staining that occurs with regular braces is prevented by using invisible braces, so you can avoid having to go back to the dentist for corrective treatments.
Patients who play contact sports also benefit from invisible braces. Regular braces can cause injury to the mouth and teeth during contact sports, even if you wear a mouth guard. Incognito braces help to prevent injury due to the placement of the brackets behind the teeth.
Regular braces can also cause difficulties for people who play wind instruments, which require the musician to make specific shapes with his or her lips. Invisible braces do not impede this like regular braces can. Both adult and teen musicians will benefit from invisible braces.
Perhaps the biggest benefit to using invisible braces is that you can retain your smile during treatment. Adult professionals and teens alike worry about how braces will affect their self-esteem, and with invisible braces, it’s a concern you do not need to have.
Most patients who are good candidates for regular braces can also get invisible braces, but each situation is unique. Contact the office of Dr. Seth Newman, serving the Long Island area, to find out if invisible braces are right for you. Call 516-626-2060 to schedule your visit today.

Orthodontic Treatment: Are Their Certain Foods I Should Avoid?

Orthodontic treatments are those that use dental appliances to correct a patient’s bad bite (technically known as a “malocclusion”). The most common and well-known orthodontic treatment is braces. When undergoing orthodontic treatment, there are certain foods and drinks you should avoid in order to prevent damage to the teeth and the appliance.

Sticky foods can get caught in the wires and brackets, making them difficult to clean. Once the sticky foods are stuck, the braces can hold them against the teeth, which can lead to tooth decay. They can even cause damage to the braces by pulling at the wires and brackets.

Examples of sticky foods to avoid include licorice, gummy candies, gum (even sugar-free gum), toffee, and caramels.

There are certain hard foods that you should also avoid because they can bend or break the wires or brackets. Ice, hard candy, popcorn and nuts should be avoided. Along with damaging the orthodontics, these food items can get caught in the wires, irritating the gums.

Chewy foods or harder foods that you would normally bite into with your front teeth need to be avoided or cut up into small pieces that you can chew with your molars. This prevents damage to the braces along the front of the mouth. These foods include whole apples, corn on the cob, chewy meats on the bone, and celery.

You will also want to minimize how much sugary food you eat, even if these items won’t cause damage to the braces. Your orthodontist will tell you to only eat a little bit of ice cream, cake, cookies, and other sweet treats that can lead to tooth decay if you don’t properly clean the braces.

Avoiding certain drinks can also help prevent tooth decay while you have braces. Soda, sweet tea, and sugary sports drinks shouldn’t be consumed more than once per day. The sugar in these beverages can be hard to remove when you have braces.

Will Orthodontics Change My Lifestyle?

Orthodontics is the practice of correcting a malocclusion (the technical term for a “bad bite”) with surgery, tooth removal, or appliances. The most familiar orthodontic appliance is dental braces, a system of wires and brackets installed in the mouth that slowly shift the teeth into proper position.

Getting braces is a decision that can change your lifestyle slightly, mostly through the avoidance of certain foods. Hard or sticky foods can both cause damage or annoyance. Hard foods can break the wires or the brackets of the braces, and sticky foods can get caught in the brackets or wires and be a challenge to remove.

Sugary foods should also be avoided while undergoing orthodontic treatment. The sugar can dissolve behind the wires or in the crevices of the brackets, where it can grow bacteria and lead to tooth decay.

Your orthodontist will give you a complete list of foods you’ll need to avoid, but a few include any form of gum, licorice, caramels and other sticky candy, ice, chips, and hard candy. If you drink soda, you will need to limit yourself to once a day, and always use a straw.

There are also a few habits you may need to give up, if you have them. For example, if you tend to chew on your pens or pencils, bite your nails, or use toothpicks, it’s a good idea to stop. Chewing on non-edible objects can damage the dental braces.

While eating, you will need to cut up food and chew it with your molars as much as possible. Using your front teeth to bite into food may cause a bracket to break.

You will still be able to play sports and maintain an active lifestyle, but you may need to wear a mouth guard so the braces don’t cut your lips or tongue if you have any impact.

Essentially, your lifestyle won’t change much. You will need to watch what you eat a bit more, and take care to not break the brackets. Using common sense to protect your teeth and braces will prevent most damage.

Orthodontics: Reasons to Start Treatment Early

Orthodontics is a branch of dentistry that uses various appliances, including braces and retainers, to help bring the teeth and jawbone into proper alignment. Braces are one of the most common orthodontic tools used to treat malocclusions, or bad bites. Though the image of braces is commonly associated with teenagers, younger patients can also undergo treatment.

The main advantage of starting orthodontic treatment early is that it will be over before the teen years. Teenagers tend to be more self-conscious than kids in their early teens or even younger, so earlier treatment means they will have a picture perfect smile throughout those more difficult years.

Starting orthodontic treatment early can also help the jaw grow to an appropriate size later in the child’s adolescence, which may prevent issues down the road. For example, an orthodontist can use an expansion device to widen the palate, making room for teeth that would otherwise have to be surgically removed to prevent crowding if the child were a teenager and the bones already set.

There are also appliances an orthodontist can use in interceptive treatments in younger children, to guide the arches of the mouth and the jaw into correct position. This may minimize the need for oral or jaw surgery when the child is older. It may also minimize the occurrence of protruding teeth, when the permanent teeth come in.

The American Association of Orthodontics recommends screening children for malocclusions no later than age seven. While the family dentist may offer some orthodontic screening, it is best to take the child to a trained orthodontist. He or she can catch any malocclusions as they are forming at that young age, and recommend the best course of action for treating them with braces, if appropriate, and as early as possible.

To schedule your child’s initial orthodontic screening in Long Island, contact our dedicated and experienced team at Newman Orthodontics today.

Invisalign Invisible Braces for Treating Dental Inconsistencies

Invisalign invisible braces are the perfect solution for treating even complex dental inconsistencies found in teenagers and adults. The greatest advantage of Invisalign is that it does not have the metal wires and brackets of traditional braces, and is therefore a more comfortable orthodontic solution.

Invisalign Invisible Braces: Suitable Solution for Major Dental Inconsistencies

Dental inconsistencies such as protruded teeth, overcrowded teeth, widely spaced teeth, crossbites, openbites, underbites and overbites can be rather distressing since these negatively affect your facial appearance. When these are corrected to give you evenly spaced teeth, it not only improves your smile but also ensures better physical health by eliminating problems such as irregular wear of tooth surfaces, tooth loss, gum diseases, chewing disorders, digestion problems and speech difficulties.

Ideal If You Don’t Want Others to Notice Your Braces

Invisalign invisible braces are specifically designed using 3D imaging technology according to your teeth structure. The patient has to wear these series of clear plastic aligners for two weeks and then replace it with a fresh set, to speed up the straightening process. By applying a gentle pressure these aligners shift your teeth to straighter positions. The normal time required for completing the treatment is 9-15 months, in the course of which the patient may have to use about 18-30 sets of aligners.

The major convenience offered by Invisalign is that these braces are detachable, so the patients can maintain superior oral hygiene. They can eat, drink, brush and floss normally. Besides, these braces are invisible and therefore the entire treatment can be completed without others noticing.

Would an Adult Benefit From Orthodontic Treatment?

When most people think of braces and other treatments associated with the orthodontist, they probably envision a young teenager. Rarely will you think of an adult wearing braces - after all, isn’t it too late to correct your smile when your teeth have been in place for years?
The answer is no, it’s not too late. Adults can benefit form orthodontic treatments.
There are a number of reasons an adult may have waited to undergo orthodontic treatment until adulthood. Their parents might not have been able to pay for braces, or their teeth may have required technology that was not around when they were a teenager. Whatever the reason, an increasing number of adults are undergoing orthodontic treatment.
Adults who want to correct a crooked smile or bad bite (malocclusion) have several options, including traditional braces. Modern braces include a small metal wire that connects the fasteners on each tooth, instead of the wide band that some adults may remember from their childhood. These braces are less noticeable and easier to care for.
Adults may also choose to undergo orthodontic treatment using Invisalign, a clear plastic aligner tray. The Invisalign system works through the use of trays custom-made for your teeth that are worn throughout the day and night. The trays are slightly adjusted at a set interval, slowly moving your teeth.
Along with being virtually invisible, Invisalign trays are low-maintenance. They need to be cleaned regularly and removed when you eat, but there’s no wax or wires to care for like there may be with traditional braces.
Additionally, patients with Invisalign can eat whatever they want without the restrictions that come with regular braces, since the Invisalign trays are removed when you eat.
Whether you decide to move forward with traditional braces or treatment with the Invisalign system, Dr. Seth Newman, your Nassau County orthodontist, will ensure that you have a healthy, straight smile. Call 516-626-2060 to schedule your professional consultation today!

Will Invisalign Help With My Overbite?

Invisalign Nassau County
Invisalign is an orthodontic tool that is similar to braces. Instead of metal wires and fasteners, however, the Invisalign system uses clear plastic trays to straighten the teeth and correct the smile.
An overbite is a form of malocclusion (“bad bite”). It happens when the teeth of the upper jaw cover the teeth of the lower jaw when the patient bites down. Overbites have a number of causes, including extensive thumb-sucking and hereditary factors.
An overbite can lead to other, more serious health issues. The patient may not be able to chew properly, which can lead to indigestion or heartburn. The bad bite may make teeth more difficult to clean, which can lead to infections of the gums. There is also a higher risk of chipping, breaking, or otherwise damaging the teeth of a bad bite.
The Invisalign system can help correct an overbite. Invisalign trays are custom-made to fit your teeth. Over regular intervals, the trays are adjusted so your teeth shift slowly, correcting the issue.
The Invisalign trays will be created to correct whatever is causing your overbite. If, for example, it is caused by protrusion of the lower teeth, which puts outward pressure on the upper teeth, the orthodontist will adjust the trays to gently shift the lower and upper teeth back into position.
Whatever is causing your overbite, your orthodontist should examine it. Every case is different, and whether or not Invisalign is right for you is up to you and your dental care team. However, Invisalign can correct most overbites, giving you a healthy, straight, beautiful smile.
To find out if you are a good candidate for Invisalign, contact Newman Orthodontics serving Nassau County.

What Causes Crooked or Misaligned Teeth?

There are many factors that play a role in the position of your teeth. If you are dealing with overcrowded, crooked or misaligned teeth, the solution may be a visit to our office to discuss how orthodontics can work for you.
When born, genetics determine your jaw bone and the shape your pallet will take as you grow. In extreme cases these are internal factors that can be surgically altered, if needed. But the majority of patients will be able to resolve any problems resulting from lack of jaw space or small pallet through orthodontics.
If permanent teeth grow that are too large for the jaw to accommodate, this creates overcrowding usually resulting in an over bite or cross bite. There isn’t anything to be done to control the size of permanent teeth, but if overcrowding is the problem, extracting one or a couple of teeth will allow the remaining teeth to shift back to a better position usually with the help of braces.
Many youngsters rely on sucking their thumb or fingers as a source of comfort. Unfortunately, this can develop into a habit that impacts how permanent teeth develop. The constant pressure placed on the upper pallet of teeth through thumb sucking can force the teeth to grow in at a crooked angle.
Teeth grinding or jaw clenching are usually the result of teeth that are not aligned correctly. Unfortunately the grinding just exacerbates the problem by adding the discomfort of ache in the jaw, neck, head, ear or teeth. Wear and tear from teeth grinding can compound misalignment resulting in broken teeth.
Since many of the traits that dictate how our teeth will develop are inherited, this is a watch and wait situation. However, as a child grows those biannual visits to the dentist become very important. You can visualize an aesthetic problem developing, but your dentist can detect any problems that can develop from improper alignment.
Teeth that overlap or come in crooked create an ideal location for plaque build-up. These areas become difficult to reach with a toothbrush trapping food, allowing plaque to form, which ultimately leads to tooth decay or gum disease.
Orthodontics can resolve many issues while offering the patient a beautiful smile that will boost self-confidence for a lifetime. Headaches: Is Malocclusion the Cause?

The definition of a malocclusion is the misalignment ofteeth that results in an incorrect relation between the teeth of the two dentalarches. In other words, a top tooth has a bottom tooth that it is supposed tomeet if the bite is in correct alignment or occlusion. If these teeth don’tmeet, the remedy that can solve the problem is dental braces.
If the bite is out of alignment and the top teeth do notcorrespond correctly to the bottom teeth, chewing or speaking may be impacted. But can this malocclusion cause headaches? Absolutely!
When the teeth in the two arches do not meet correctly, theybasically slide off each either during normal daily functions. Although usuallydone subconsciously, this deviation in the bite can result in clenching orgrinding the teeth. Often done during sleep, grinding and clenching can becomeso habitual that you might catch yourself doing it during your waking hours aswell.
When you clench your jaw or grind your teeth, you areputting excessive pressure on the bones and muscles. The result is a headache, jaw ache, tooth ache or neck ache. How can you tell if your headache is aresult of malocclusion or some other cause?
Your dentist can conduct a simple test where a specialcolored paper is placed between the teeth. Tapping on the paper with teeth willreveal where the teeth are hitting and missing during the biting motion. If amalocclusion is diagnosed, dental braces are a good option for correction.
Orthodontics is a great solution for a cross bite, overbiteor under bite. X-rays and dental impressions taken prior to treatment willdemonstrate exactly what is needed to correct the bite.
Dental braces slowly reposition the teeth by applying thecorrect amount of pressure over time to achieve the desired results. Once theocclusion has been corrected, patients no longer experience the teeth slidingoff each other while eating or speaking.
To keep teeth from returning to an incorrect bite, aretainer is generally worn. The length of time needed for teeth to remembertheir new correct position varies.
Once grinding and clenching has been resolved due to acorrection in your occlusion, headaches due to bite issues should cease. As anadded bonus, you now have a beautiful smile to enjoy for a lifetime.

Why are retainers essential to orthodontic treatment?

At the completion of your orthodontic treatment, you may be so relieved to have the braces off, you may not be inclined to wear your retainers. If you are an adult who has worn a retainer since childhood, you may assume that the appliance is no longer necessary. Sometimes, due to unfortunate circumstances, your retainer may become lost or damaged, and you may not recognize the importance of replacing it.
There are thousands of reasons that patients may lose sight of the need to wear their retainers. As your orthodontist will tell you, retainers are indeed essential to the long-term success of your orthodontic treatment.
To appreciate the reason for ongoing retention, it may help to understand a little bit about dental anatomy. Although the teeth are anchored to the jaw bone, they are not fused directly to the bone. Instead, the roots of the teeth are held in place by microscopic ligaments or fibers that serve as tiny shock absorbers. These fibers allow the teeth to respond to biting and chewing forces without breaking.
This relationship between the teeth and the bone makes it possible for your orthodontist to reposition the teeth by applying gentle, steady force. Once the teeth have been properly positioned, they must continue to be subjected to gentle pressure (with a retainer), or there will be the tendency for them to drift out of position.
Without a retainer, the teeth will be left at the mercy of other forces that can push them into an undesirable position. The muscles of the lips, cheeks, and tongue generate constant pressure on the teeth which can be counteracted with retainers.
As the name implies, the retainer works to “retain” or preserve the position of the teeth. Failure to wear the appliance regularly for an indefinite period of time following the completion of active orthodontic treatment will hinder the process.
Many patients have reported that, after a long period without the retainer, the appliance no longer fits due to the movement of the teeth. For other patients, the retainer fits into place, but feels tight and leads to discomfort. To avoid these complications, it is recommended that the retainers be worn as directed.
If you are currently wearing a retainer, it is important to continue your good habit! If you have questions about your existing retainer or are in need of a new one in Long Island or the surrounding areas, call the orthodontic practice of Dr. Seth Newman at 516-626-2060 today for an appointment.

Am I Still a Candidate for Invisalign if I’ve had Braces?

It is absolutely acceptable and sometimes necessary to repeat orthodontic treatment even years after the braces have been removed. Often, patients who have completed the orthodontic process with traditional braces as a teen or a child may have a need for further treatment as an adult.
If you have noticed that the teeth have shifted out of position, you may wish to have them realigned in order to produce a more esthetic and uniform smile. As an adult, however, you may be unwilling to undergo the traditional treatment that includes metal braces and brackets.
The Invisalign procedure offers an effective and comfortable alternative to the traditional method. Your orthodontist can utilize a series of customized aligners to realign your teeth. These clear aligners are discreet and virtually invisible to those around you, allowing you to protect your privacy and project a more professional appearance.
The duration of your treatment and the number of aligners that will be required will need to be determined by your orthodontist. In many cases, a limited treatment may be recommended, lasting anywhere from a few months to a year. In fact, as an Invisalign patient, you will hold much of the success of your treatment in the palm of your hand. Adhering to your orthodontist’s instructions and wearing your aligners as recommended can significantly shorten the treatment period.
If you recall a less than pleasurable experience with braces, you may be hesitant to proceed with Invisalign. But, fear not! Your experience with Invisalign can be far more comfortable than the braces that linger in your memory.
Your new aligners will not pinch or irritate your soft tissue. They are fabricated from a smooth, lightweight plastic that has been contoured to your anatomy. Although these aligners should be worn 24 hours each day, they can be removed for eating and drinking. You will also be permitted to remove the aligners for brushing and flossing after meals.
Whether you have had braces in the past or you are a first-time orthodontic patient, you can still be a candidate for the Invisalign procedure. Call Newman Orthodontics, serving Long Island, for an appointment today to discuss your options.

Is Invisalign a Treatment Option for Malocclusions?

When the teeth are out of alignment, the concern is often much more than a simple cosmetic issue. Known as malocclusion, teeth that fail to fit together properly can present functional challenges and physical damage.
Invisalign, an exciting alternative to traditional braces, can be used to correct malocclusions in a comfortable and discreet manner.  With the gentle assistance of clear aligners, your orthodontist can coax your teeth into the proper alignment in order to achieve a more ideal occlusion.
Your orthodontist may suggest Invisalign as a treatment option to correct your crossbite, overbite, crowding, or excessive spacing. Without a single wire, bracket, or metal band, your occlusion will be gradually corrected resulting in an improved appearance and improved functionality.
Invisalign aligners are ultra-thin and comfortable because they are created in a state-of-the-art facility based on three dimensional measurements of your teeth and gums. The edges of each aligner are smooth and contoured to the shape of your teeth and gums. This custom design results in a low-profile aligner that will not impact your speech, lips, or facial appearance. Even during social interactions, the aligners are virtually transparent to those around you.
Treatment time will vary depending upon the extent of your malocclusion. At the conclusion of your treatment, you can expect to enjoy the many advantages of proper occlusion. When the teeth fit together properly, the jaw joint is also enabled to function properly. This translates into less stress on the joint, less discomfort, and the prevention of troublesome TMJ disorders. In addition, the teeth themselves will no longer be subjected to excessive forces and uneven wear patterns.
The esthetic benefits of correcting your bite cannot be overlooked. Correcting your bite helps to improve your outward appearance. Your facial profile can be brought into proportion when the teeth are in the most ideal position. It is certainly true that we tend to smile more freely when we feel confident about our smiles.
